Coding Foundations Lab  (Rising 1st–2nd Graders)

Coding Foundations Lab is a hands-on camp designed to build the thinking skills behind coding—before students ever work with code on a screen. Created for rising 1st and 2nd graders, the camp focuses on logic, sequencing, and problem-solving habits that support future success in computer science and beyond.

Each day, campers work through carefully designed challenges that strengthen sequencing, pattern recognition, cause-and-effect reasoning, and conditional thinking (“if this, then that”). Through games, physical movement, and collaborative problem-solving, students learn how giving clear instructions, following rules, and revising plans leads to successful outcomes.

Rather than emphasizing screens or syntax, the camp centers on how systems work and how clear thinking produces predictable results. Campers practice explaining their reasoning, learning from errors, and working together—building confidence, persistence, and flexibility.

By the end of the week, students leave with a strong foundation in the habits of mind used in coding, including logical reasoning, attention to detail, and comfort with trial and error. Coding Foundations Lab is an ideal entry point for students who are curious about technology, enjoy puzzles and games, or will later move into block-based coding and robotics programs.

No prior coding, reading, or typing experience required.
